Spelt Tortilla Chips

Superbowl Sunday is fast approaching.  Do you know what snacks you will be eating?  As much as I love football, I love food more and therefore look forward to any excuse to make, and eat, a lot of delicious food!  This year I decided it was time to make my own chips.  I wanted to make a healthier version (and more tasty in my opinion) of the classic tortilla chip.  Success!  These chips are salty, crunchy, and unlike regular tortilla chips, they have a nutty flavor that compliments just about any dip!  Personally, my favorite dip is hummus.  If you have never made your own before, it's about time you try it.  Once you do, you will never go back to store-bought hummus!  Enough of my hummus rant because I have also had these chips with salsa, ranch, and guacamole dip and they really are just as good!

I used my spelt flour tortillas to make these chips.  Spelt grain is the ancient form of wheat as it was before we modified it into the strain we eat today.  Spelt flour contains more protein and minerals and also has less gluten than regular whole wheat.  While it's is not gluten-free, people who have a sensitivity to gluten can sometimes tolerate spelt when regular wheat irritates them.  I love the nutty almost toasted flavor spelt flour gives baked goods.  The added nutrition is not bad either :)

Once the tortillas are made, the process to make them into chips is very easy.  Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the tortillas like a pizza into 8 pieces and lightly brush both sides of each piece with olive oil.  Then, sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and whatever other seasonings you want!  I love adding garlic powder, but feel free to go crazy with your favorite spices!  After a few minutes in the oven, the chips are done.  It's that simple.  You can make the tortillas in advance and either store them in the refrigerator or freezer to have ready, or make the chips in advance and store them in a air tight container or bag in your pantry.

I have a few more recipes I'll be sharing within the next two weeks to help get you ready for your game-day meal.  These chips will spice up your munchies menu.  Put them out with other chips and pretzels to offer variety and healthy options, not to mention introduce a whole new level of delicious!

Spelt Tortilla Chips

yield: 32 tortilla chips

4 spelt flour tortillas
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper, to taste
garlic powder (optional)

Directions:
1.  Preheat oven to 450 F.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2.  Cut each tortilla like a pizza into 8 equal pieces.  Brush both sides of each piece with olive oil. Lay flat on parchment paper.  Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and other desired spices (I added garlic powder).  Flip and repeat on the other side.
3.  Bake for 6-7 minutes, flipping halfway through.  They should be slightly soft when done; they will continue to harden as they cool.
